How to sign a PDF without printing or scanning

The document arrives as a PDF. It leaves as a PDF. The only reason paper gets involved is your signature — here's how to take that step out.

The print–sign–scan loop, and why it persists

Most people sign PDFs the long way: print the document, sign it in ink, scan or photograph it, then email the copy back. It works, but it needs a printer and a scanner, degrades the document into a photo of a page, and takes ten minutes for a two-second signature.

The fix is to keep the signature as what it already is — an image of your handwriting — and place it directly on the PDF page.

Step 1 — Capture your signature once

Sign your name on a blank piece of white paper with a dark pen. Photograph it with your phone in good light, or scan it if you have a scanner handy — this is the last time one is involved. A clear PNG or JPG is all you need.

Step 2 — Add it to Stamp Document

Open the web app or the desktop app, click Add… in the stamps panel, and pick your signature image. Enter its real size — a typical signature is around 50 × 15 mm — and it's saved. From now on it's one drag away on every document; the same goes for a rubber stamp, and you can keep both.

Step 3 — Open the PDF and place your signature

Open the PDF, drag your signature onto the signature line, and adjust until it sits right. It lands at its real printed size on any page format — contracts, invoices, delivery notes, plans. Every placement stays movable and undoable until you export.

Step 4 — Export the signed copy

Click Save As… and you get a new PDF with your signature drawn into the page — the original file stays untouched. Send it back the way it came. No printer, no scanner, no photo of a page.

Is this the same as an e-signature?

No — and that's the point. E-signature services run signing ceremonies with certificates and audit trails, useful when a counterparty requires them. Stamp Document does what your pen does: it puts your real signature on the page. If the paper version would have been fine, this is the same thing without the paper.
